Spring Breaking the Rules- Horizontal Stripes

My entire life, even when I was skinny back in early puberty, I've heard, "You should never wear horizontal stripes- they make you look wide." So for years I avoided horizontal stripes- heaven forbid I purposely make myself look WIDE! But in the past year I've realized something, well, two somethings... One- I like horizontal stripes (need proof? Here's my black striped shirt. Need more? Here's my red one!). And two- I am wide. Is a pattern really going to make that much of a difference? Wait, I've discovered three somethings! Three- I don't care. I like stripes and I'm going to break the rules and wear them whenever I want!

I don't really have any advice for wearing stripes. They say wear stripes on the slimmest part of your body. They say wear skinny stripes. They say, they say... who's this "they" that apparently decided fifty years ago what we all could wear? I saw this dress on sale at Old Navy super cheap. I was in love with the bright colors (it's also available in tonal blues if that's your style) and the comfy material. Now it did briefly flit through my mind "But Katie, you aren't supposed to were horizontal stripes. That's a rule." However, if I've learned anything over the past months of blogging, the most important part of any outfit is confidence.

If that's not enough encouragement for you, then here's a link to a 2008 study that proved women look thinner in horizontal stripes than vertical stripes (even when the ones wearing the horizontal stripes were heavier). How come that study didn't make the national news? I don't ever remember anyone telling me is was okay to wear stripes! It's a conspiracy to keep the wide woman away from all the awesome stripes, I'm telling ya! ;)

I am on spring break this week which means no work dress code, so I am going to focus on shattering some of these long-held rules of plus size fashion! I hope you will follow along with this series- "Spring Breaking the Rules"!

What fashion rule should I break next??

I recently discovered stripes, thanks in part to your black stripe and red stripe shirts. I too stayed away from horizontal stripes, despite not being too large to begin with. I love them now! I also am rocking an Old Navy jersey striped dress today, mine is one of the sleeveless, no-tie ones, in yellows/blues.

I love the bright colors in this dress, and I'm definitely a fan of stripes! I've gotta check out that 2008 study, how interesting. The background in these photos is really pretty :)

I love breaking the "black with brown" rule and "redheads can't wear pink/red".... screw that!

I have a horizontal striped skirt and 2 horizontal striped dresses. I slap those stripes right over my wide hips and I actually think it makes me look thinner. Something about the stripes accentuating the size difference between the waist and hips maybe? I think your dress works because it has a great shape and hits you at the right part of your waist. I don't think patterns matter too much when you have a great fitting garment.

I love all the bright color stripes in this dress, Katie! I don't think I actually own any vertical striped clothes, they're all horizontal!

Love! You look so cute! Like you, I am throwing out the rules. I am big. No color or style or pattern will make me magically look like a size 4.

Who gives a shit what "they" say, you look absolutely amazing! Those colours are amazing on you and I don't even know what people talk about when they say stripes do bad things...I think this shows off your curves amazingly. And did you get a bit of a tan?? You look so pretty and sun-kissed here!

I definitely sized down in it. It's a big dress. That's one of the things that irks me about ON- no consistency in their sizing!

Thank you for stopping by! I hope you'll be back!

I have one shirt with very tiny vertical stripes, but you are right- they barely even make anything in vertical stripes!

You're right! Fit is super important. If something doesn't fit well, I'm not confident. And if I'm not confident then I don't look good. Confidence is key!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

You break both of those rules beautifully!

I love that dress! And I really love yellow and blue together- one of my favorite combinations!
