Spring Breaking The Rules- Short Shorts

Yep, you read it right. This was a subject I was going to have to tackle one way or another. Truthfully, I thought it would be in the heat of summer, but I figured my "Spring Breaking the Rules" series would be a great tie to discuss the dreaded "S" word. Shorts. I have lots of association with shorts- little British school boys in uniforms all the way to the eponymous "Daisy Dukes" revival of the early 1990s. Honestly, I've never been a fan of shorts, even though I grew up in the steamy heat of the American South. I would wear shorts in the privacy of my own home, but never in public.

Until now. It's time. Time for me to show that women of all sizes can wear shorts and look great! I saw these shorts one day while window shopping online, and I knew they were the ones. Lacy, blush pink- so cute and girly. They are a little shorter than I would prefer, okay, maybe, a lot shorter! So how did I counteract feeling a little out of place and a little over-exposed? Well, duh! I strapped on 4-inch wedges and pranced around town taking pictures at a busy intersection. So much for not standing out (of course that scenario sounds slightly streetwalker-esque)!

I'm going to spend A LOT of time this summer talking about shorts- long shorts, short shorts, the dreaded chub-rub (you know what I'm talking about!)- but today I just wanted to be cute and delicate and a little impractical.

Bummer about those telephone poles, but it's still a great photo!

Love those blush, lacy shorts - very cute :) And that little pocketwatch is so sweet and darling. I'm not a fan of shorts either, but living in the south we have to grin & bear it!

I have a love/hate relationship with shorts. They are totally cute, but I hate when they bunch up in the crotch when I'm walking...TMI? haha :) You look great - those shorts are SO pretty!

Those lacy shorts are so very cute, Katie! I'm always wearing shorts in the summer...sometimes it's just too hot out to wear anything else!

Those are so darling! I've been looking for some shorts for summer, but I haven't found anything that is cut the way I want them. I suspect there is an evil plot afoot in the manufacture of shorts, because even the shorts made by companies that manufacture pants that fit me beautifully the shorts just fit...weirdly.

I have a couple of extra pairs of khaki capri pants, and I'm thinking about having them cut down into shorts. If that works out, I may just shop thrift stores and spring sales for slacks that fit me properly in the waist, hips & butt and get them cut down.

A pocket watch and lace?!? Those shorts are so adorable! If I wear shorts, I wear Bermuda shorts. I'm a little scared of short shorts, but lace might quell my fears.

Thank you so much! It's been really fun! I wish spring break was TWO weeks long!

The lace definitely helped me. Well, that and my husband's expression when he saw me! ;)

There's definitely a conspiracy going on! I'm going to be hitting the thrift store and making my own boyfriend jean shorts very soon!

You are so right! And I think it's going to be a smokin' hot summer!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Definitely not TMI! And there's no way to politely pull those babies out of your crotch!!!

Grin and bear it and document it for the world to see! ;) The things we do for fashion!

Adorable! Lace shorts -- doesn't get any more feminine! You look beautiful as always. I really need to check out Kohl's!

Oh I love those shorts. So bummed we don't have Kohl's in Canada. Will have to make a trip across the border for some cute summer stuff.

Ok, everytime I see your "Breaking the Rules" title, I starting singing the old song "Breakin' the Law, breakin' the law" all gravelly (is that a word) LOL!!!

Cute shorts! :)

I like the girly color and fabric of those shorts! The pocket watch is great, too. :)

Cute shorts! Light colors like the ones in this outfit, and the white dress yesterday are so flattering on you! Can't wait to hear what you have to say about chub rub. I've been thinking I might do a post on the subject when it gets a little warmer.

Hee hee "chub rub"? You mean it has a name? My sons love to tell me my shorts are too short and that's when I only wear short-shorts around the house and when we kayak (makes potty breaks easier tee hee). You look adorable!

AudreyB said...

Those are short, but you've got really nice legs. I wouldn't wear anything that didn't come to my knee tops because I cannot bear the thought of killing people with the sight of my thighs. I tend to go for capri length in the summer, but I'm in a part of Canada that doesn't really get terribly hot except for maybe a week or two, so it works for me.

Katie!! You looks so AMAZING in those shorts! Well, I mean you look amazing all the time but I really like those shorts on you! May have to snag a pair for myself! I love how you're 'breaking' all these stupid rules and stereotypes and showing that curvy women can be fashion forward and fabulous!

LMBO @ Chub Rub!!! I know what you mean :) I think these shorts look amazing on you.

Those shorts are absolutely adorable. I'm more of a skirt person than shorts myself but pink lace shorts, those are something I could enjoy.

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

That's exactly what I thought too! They were too cute to pass up!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

The bane of my existence, Keesha! I got it so bad at the beach last year that I couldn't walk for two days! It was awful.

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I think this is my favorite comment ever! Thank you so much! I love you. I hope you can find those shorts in store or the next size up will wrok. I would love to see you in them. They would look amazing with your skin tone!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Thank you, Audrey! You are blessed I think to live in Canada, unless it snows a lot. Give me booty shorts and cellulite any day over icy snow!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

The name is so much sweeter sounding than it really is! It's the absolute worst! I usually keep the short shorts at home too!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

We may just have to team up on the chub rub blogs. I am going to try out some stuff and see if anything helps me. There are lots of products on the market!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I know- I feel in love with the fabric and color too! So cute. More than I would ever spend on a pair of shorts, but I thought it was worth it!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

And when I think of that song, I think of "Beavis and Butthead". Clearly this is the ultimate compliment! LOL! :)

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Oh, definitely! If it's not a bad drive, it's totally worth it. It's huge store and they are always having great sales! And I bet if you tell them you drive to Canada, they could probably round up a 30% off coupon for you!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

You do! I love it! It's one of my favorite stores by far. Kohl's is always having great sales!!!

So cute, those shorts. Stoopid rooles :P

I don't own a single pair of shorts. Not because of the rules, but just because I'm not a shorts person. I try, but they just don't get me :)
