Definitely Your Grandma's Dress

When Tori approached me with her "Grandma's Closet" Wardrobe Challenge, I originally balked at the idea. I'm not a thrift shopper. I'm not a seamstress. I'm not a creative dresser. However, the more I thought about it, the more excited I got about the challenge. The first step was finding an appropriate wardrobe piece. My fashionable friend Tricia swooped in to save the day again, blessing me with this lovely gem of a dress. Here's the dress in it's original state when Tricia dressed up as an old lady.

Beautiful! Right? As we started planning the makeover I had some inspiration- I was thinking casual summer dress, hi-lo hem, off-the-shoulder sleeves, really cute and casual. Like these dresses-

So I started randomly chopping into the dress. I thought about borrowing a sewing machine, or even having someone else tailor it for me, but I was feeling very Andie in "Pretty in Pink" just chopping away at the dress, making it into something special just for me. I had really high-fashion hopes. But I ended up with something that may have come out of Donna Martin's "90210" closet circa the early 1990s (or maybe her mom's closet). Like this-

Love this look, and the Donna Martin reference to go with it. You're further reaffirming my suspicion that everything from the early 90s ins en vogue again. I'm waiting for doc marten's and flannel to make their resurgence next!

Great job, Katie! It looks nothing like a dress my Grandma would wear. I doubt Curtis thought you looked like an old lady. ; ) Very cute! I definitely have to check out what the other girls came up with.

Well, I definitely cut it up to make it a little less Grandma and a little sexier!

What's old is new again, right? But I don't know if I can handle Docs and flannel. Ugh! I need to dig out some pics!

Same dress! I cut that baby up! Thank you so much :)

Right? I'll be a tailor. I don't sew I just cut haphazardly and use safety pins. It's very high fashion!

Thank you! I think I'd like to cut it into a skirt as well :)
