Summer Sky: How to Wear a White Dress (Pt 2)

Dress- Dorothy Perkins (Similar)
Belt and Necklace- New York and Co.
Shoes- X Appeal
Cardigan- Gap Outlet (Similar- Target)

I wrote a really great post for tomorrow's Tunesday Tuesday. Well, I think it's great, but I may be biased.  When I finished it and started to insert photos into it, I stopped. I didn't want to put pictures of me in a pretty outfit into the post. I felt like it was good enough to stand alone.

But I am scared. As a blogger you always wonder, "Are people actually reading this or just commenting on my pictures?" I'm sure we are all guilty of this at one time or another. Blogging is an exhausting (yet incredibly rewarding) hobby for me. I'll be honest though- there have been times when I have really poured my heart out in a post and been a little confused when someone posts "Cute outfit" or "I like those shoes". At the same time, I'm sure I've done that to bloggers I like too.

I've noticed most bloggers put all of their pictures at the beginning of their posts. But I am scared. If I do that, will you scroll down to read? Or will it take too much time? That's why I always break up my paragraphs with my outfit pictures. I hope that at the very least you will skim my writing. But today I am putting the pictures first. Not really sure why. Am I trying to punish myself? Am I trying to make things easier for you? What kind of layout do you prefer from your bloggers and why?

I usually read the blog then look at the pictures...I still think you need to write a book! By the way, you look beautiful in that dress. Love the mix of colors.

I personally like it when the pictures are broken up with text. Even if sometimes they don't go together. It is more like a journey that way. I have found myself NOT reading the words if there are too many pictures off the start but if those pictures were interspersed, I am sure I would have.

Can't wait to read your post. I definitely come to see your style but stay because I like what you write. :)

I always read your blog. The pictures are secondary to me; you always look beautiful. Today I found myself scrolling past the pictures to get to what you had written. I realize that, on the surface, this is a fashion blog. And yet, I too find it a little strange when your post is particularly poignant and a lot of the comments are strictly about the clothes.
To be honest, yours is the only blog I read regularly (well except for Curtis', but he doesn't post enough). As far as layout goes I like when the pictures are placed intermittantly throughout. I find that to be most pleasing to the eye.

I like it better when pictures are broken up with text. For me, this time, I scrolled down your pictures, missed where you wrote something, read the comments, then had to go back up to find what you wrote... I like what you write though, so I do enjoy reading it. You have a way with words and it feels like we're having a conversation.

Totally read the posts each time- but I also love your pics. You're teaching me a lot with your words and and your style. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with me.

I've been having the same debate with myself about the text position in my posts. Your pictures today are pretty saucy, so people might get distracted and forget to read the text. I'm going to guess that your husband will be taking a few glances at this post today...haha. I will be sure to check in tomorrow for your post!

Who knew yellow and blue work so well together!? And I agree. Sometimes it's so hard to read ALL of the blogs you love, so you sometimes just look that the pictures. But it's difficult when the post is heartfelt, and no one even paid attention to it. Anyways, I can't wait to read your post tomorrow, which I have no doubt is good enough to stand alone.

Savannah said...

I like it when the pictures are broken up by text. I'll admit, I do look at the pictures before I read the text, but I do read all the text. Love this outfit! Wish I could recreate it :)

Alice said...

I worry about this as well, I out nearly as much thought into what I write in my posts as I do to the photos so it can be a bit disheartening when the only response you get is 'super cute!'. I like to think it is just that people are easily distracted, but I guess most of the time it's just that people are busy and probably just skim. I tend to put a couple of photos up, then some text, then end with a full outfit photo. I don't know if it works but it's just the habit I've gotten into xo

I wonder if people read what I write all the time! There are admittedly some blogs that I only look at pictures, but others that I read all the way through. Just depends on the blog/ if I've connected with that person.

Now that I've said that- you're really making me wish I'd bought this dress. Love the way you style it:)

I completely understand what you mean! It can be hard to read through every single blog and it's so easy to just look at the pictures. I find myself reading through the ones that I feel most connected to and the ones that I know read through mine as well. Anyway, I love what write and I love your outfits! :)

I know I always enjoy a thoughtful comment much more than one that just says "cute outfit". I try my hardest to read through a blog before commenting on it, otherwise I feel like it's pointless for me to even comment. When I'm telling a story, I like to put some text first. Otherwise, I put the text underneath the photos.

PS I am making a mental note of how stunning turquoise and white look together!

i think its a good thing to test the waters, i always read your text because i think its great, and i think its important that we feel validated when we are expressing ourselves - if what is being said doesn't seem to be recognised i think its natural to question things - i want to re-assure you so much that what you do is fabulous, i enjoy your blog so much, but remain true to yourself and keep up the good work - you cannot please everyone but you have the right to please yourself x

This is an amazing outfit! The yellow and blue really compliment the white.

If it's a fashion blog, then I definitely like it when paragraphs are broken up with pictures. However, it would depend if the blog post is exclusively about the outift. I visit many fashion bloggers who don't just post clothes posts but also include other things like recipes, beauty product reviews, and even stories of their pets in their blog. I think these make for the most interesting type of blogs. If the blog post is interesting, I would surely scroll down to see what you're written! :)

I definitely read your blog because you are a great writer :). And the beautiful pics are great, too. Nothing to change I would say :).

Oh I love this outfit! The colors are beautiful together and I love how the belt and necklace complement each other so well.

I really don't have a preference of photos first/last/embedded. I think that the type of people that don't read the text aren't going to read it no matter where it is :D I'm sure your post for tomorrow is great, and I promise to read the whole thing ;)

Funny that you bring this up - I am always interested in the writing. The thoughts behind the pictures and when I just saw all pictures at the beginning of your post I was a bit confused. This is wonderful colorful outfit for summer!

I love reading the text that goes along with the pictures. Maybe it's the English teacher in me, but I prefer to have a context for the images. Even if the text isn't particularly about the outfit. I like to know why someone chose that sweater/dress/accessory, the story behind how the pieces were acquired, etc.

I am emotionally attached to my clothing so it's natural for me to have a narrative for my outfit selections (even for the yoga capris, tunic and sweater I throw on to go to the grocery store-that whole 450 people in my town thing). Because I have a narrative I have the expectation that others do too-especially fashion bloggers!

By the way-I love your DP dress. Mine just got here in the mail on Friday and I can't wait to wear it!

I agree completely! There are some bloggers that you just definitely connect to... Thank you for always taking the time to read and comment!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only person who wonders! The connection is definitely important. I follow a ton of blogs, and it's just not realistic to read and comment all the time- I'd never have time to do anything else. That being said , I totally read yours every time, and I'm so glad you posted about this dress!!! ;)

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I like your layout of photos... good idea. I agree about the writing- you are saying exactly how I feel. I'm not bashing anyone or saying people should be stopping everything to read what I have to say. But it was great to get some feedback!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Thank you for commenting, Savannah! I think I am the same way, except I read first, and then I look at the pictures!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Awww, thank you so much, Grace! You are right on all accounts. We don't have unlimited time to read, but the same way I wouldn't want to ignore someone else's heartfelt post, I don't want mine ignored!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I thought the exact same thing about my pictures ;) I may have posted them on purpose to distract and test my readers.

I think I've got my answers- if people are going to read, it doesn't matter where the pictures and text is located!

i used to write much more non-clothing-related topics, but i started feeling like no one was reading it, so i really trimmed my text back to mostly clothing-related. i go back and forth about that because sometimes i really do want to talk about more, but i confess it's also easier to just "stick to the facts" with the clothes - the posts get written much faster when I do that. i do still intersperse pictures with texts, though, just because i feel like it makes for a better all-around post, for many of the reasons your commentators also cite - much more likely to read text AND look at pictures, even if the reader just skims. it's a rough business though. I'm still on the fence about it, but at the end of the day you just have to stay true to what YOU want to do. that's the only way you can maintain your voice.

GREAT outfit. you look delightfully summery! i just love DP dresses these days... i will always love blue and yellow together - it was one of my first outfits!

One great thing about being a blogger is that you can do whatever you want in your blog, right? I understand we want more readers, but there will be definitely "your" readers who will read whatever you post no matter what. And really aren't those the people who count? Anyway- I love this outfit....now that I think of it I don't think I own a white dress besides my wedding dress. I like how you've paired the dress with colorful accents..might have to try that when I do get a white dress!!

I have to admit, I was going to make sure I commented on this one b/c I seriously LOVE how this outfit looks! But, I am also a reader that does go past the pictures. I actually like to read what you say b/c you have a lot of the same views on life/issues as me. As a reader and blogger, I like when the pictures are broken up into the post. I think it helps make the post look more like a story or thought line then just a huge block of pictures and some thoughts to add.

Hannah @ Tattoos and Pearls said...

I love the "matchy matchy" necklace and belt in this outfit, Katie! Usually I overthink things and try to NOT match, but this outfit makes me want to match in an outfit soon! I think that if you are writing great content, people will read it. I do often wonder if people are reading what I am writing, but at the end of the day, I am blogging for ME, so if not everyone takes the time to read what I have to say, it's Ok- I still feel great about myself and the fact that I even put myself out there in this blog world! Keep on writing, girl! I am reading!

I got this dress:
http://us.dorothyperkins.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=34072&storeId=13065&productId=4809090&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=339594&parent_categoryId=338998&pageSize=200

(Multi stripe square necked dress) In real life it's not as "neon" as the web pictures make it look and the zipper on the back is much more exposed and prominent. I love it. It's a great mix of traditional, eccentrial, preppy and nautical. I'm envisioning some great looks with a navy blazer and my khaki cigarette pants for fall. I love remixing dresses for all seasons.

I love to see an outfit post and read the text to see what a blogger was inspired by, why they wore the outfit, etc. Although cliche (eh) the outfit is cute--I love the teal accessories--especially the belt. Adds a nice pop of color. The yellow cardigan adds a nice feminine touch and is great for the season. Very nice look. I'm not much of a white dress girl, but I say that I may consider it. Glad we found your blog Katie.

Marie_McGrath said...

This is a very interesting subject you wrote here. I must admit that I am guilty of not reading what bloggers write sometimes and only commenting on their photos. I think that its mostly because we all read soooo many blogs on a daily basis that it becomes hard to read every single word of each one. But I know what you mean about feeling dissapointed when your readers don't read what you write. I post all of my pictures at the beggining and then write on the bottom, but I'm considering changing this layout. I find that I read more from bloggers who divide their text within pictures. Not sure yet though!

I totally see where you are coming from. I can usually tell when someone hasn't read my post and it just doing a "drive by" comment. I usually laugh and it doesn't entirely bother me. Maybe when I started blogging it did, but now I know who my quality readers are and who are just name dropping. I have to admit I am guilty of a quick comment too. It's the nature of the business I think and at the end of the day it doesn't matter what they comment, it matters that they stopped by :)

I was really conscious of the matching which I also tend to avoid. I really wanted a turquoise cardigan, but I thought that might be too much (though I'd still be willing to try it).

Thanks so much for giving me feedback. Blogging can seem so one-sided sometimes!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

It's a tough balance. I know lots of people who write about the clothes, which I enjoy. I know people who just tell cute little fun stories, which I enjoy. I'm not good at either!

DP has so many beautiful dresses- I am banning myself from the site until school starts back, then I may buy a couple of back to school dresses!

You look great! And I do both...read and look at pics. :)

Mel said...

I normally both read and look at your pictures. Sometimes one or the other speaks to me more and I want to comment on it. I guess it is normally your pictures that draw me in though and keep me reading. For example, when I saw this post I though "I would never have thought to pair yellow with turquoise, I wonder what she is going to say about that," and then I read your post. I guess in general, I feel like it is always better to tell you when I enjoyed a part of your post, or outfit, even if I don't have much else to comment.

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Sorry I didn't say anything about my outfit planning! ;)

I agree with sometimes I comment on blogs and sometimes I don't. I want my comments to be meaningful, so if I can't do that, then I don't say anything!

Carrie said...

I just HAD to pin this - such a beautiful, summery look. I love the head-to-toe turquoise accents contrasted with the sunny yellow cardi. Home run! :)
I like photos broken up with text. If I follow a blog regularly, I do make a point of reading the post as well. I'm actually less inclined to follow a blog regularly if it's only photos ... I like text because I want to get to know the woman behind the beautiful outfits!
While I think photos are essential to drawing people in, that doesn't mean I rule out the occasional text-only post. I know that some posts are not going to get many (if any) comments, but if it's important to me, I'll go ahead and post it anyways. :)

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Thank you for pinning, Carrie! I was afraid it was to matchy, but I liked the way it turned out!

I like breaking up the text with pictures, it's a little mini-break for your eyes. And I agree as far as comments!

First of all, that dress is GORGEOUS on you. I love how you styled it, and it really suits your figure! Fantastic.
Secondly... I think I slightly prefer pictures broken up by text over pictures first and then text. I don't know why, though.
Thirdly... I'm definitely guilty of only commenting on an outfit even if I have read the post too. Mostly because I tend to feel like I don't have any interesting opinions to voice on the post. It's such a good point to make, though, and you've inspired me to take more thought about how I comment. :)
