I took a bunch of shots of Sean and his baby cousin, and I was disappointed to see how many were blurry. But I did get a few good ones.
I keep telling Curtis I want to take some photography classes, but what I really mean is I want HIM to take the photography classes, and show me in super simple terms how to do what I want to do. So far he has resisted.
I know I've blogged about this skirt already, but what can I say? I really like it. I did change it up a little. Come on, guys! I am wearing a different color t-shirt, and a different long, dangling necklace. What can I say? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Except I never say "ain't". Never. Also I feel slightly like a pleasantly-plump Sharon Stone. Remember that year she wore the long ball gown style skirt to the Oscars and a T-shirt for Gap and no bra and every one could see her nipples? No? Well, I went to find a picture, and I was wrong. So that's why you don't remember! She did wear a Gap T with no bra but the bottom wasn't ball gown style, so never mind. And yes, I am wearing a bra, and apparently I am obsessed with bras and boobs lately!

Hi. I enjoy that your clothes are always so affordable and approachable. For blurred backgrounds you need a wider apertures but you'll need to adjust your exposure times (shorter exposures). Think of it this way: apertures are the hole that light goes through to make the image and exposure is the time that light is allowed to pass through said hole. If you want a bigger, wider aperture you'll need a shorter time for that shutter to be open :)
You crack me up girl. I love that skirt! I asked my friend about the blurry background and I can't remember what she said...So I guess I'm no help. I just know that my camera can't do it because I don't have the right kind of lens. I don't even know half of what my camera can do. I'd love to take a class on it!

LOVE that skirt Katie - it looks perfect with the orange! And I hear ya on the photography classes - I just want someone to tell me how to do everything and make it super easy :) Have a great weekend! How'd the play go?

I am jealous of everyone's pictures, including yours! My camera is so basic that there isn't much I can do. I have a lot of things to buy before a camera though (a new laptop, for one) so my pictures will continue to be mediocre.
I'm glad you remixed this skirt with a different color. Love it!
Haha, I love how you went on a tangent about Sharon Stone. I love this skirt on you, so I'm totally happy to see it again. The flower in your hair is so cute. Hope you have a fabulous weekend! :)

Hope you can convince Curtis to take a photography class! I'd love to get a new camera for more fabulous photos but it seems the better the camera, the harder it is to figure it out! Have a great weekend, Katie!

I don't have a super fancy camera, but I can get a blurred background on really close up photos of small objects. I think the secret to the blurred background is to have your subject far away from the background and to zoom in. Does that make sense?I have a friend who is a photography genius. I have a fancy camera and photography lessons on my wish list.

Ha! You crack me up. I want pretty photos too. But I think I need a nice camera first. Sigh. Make Curtis take a class for sure. It's what I would do too!

I took a photography class- it was a lot of fun. My instructor was amazing, he helped me to see the things that I never saw before. I'm sure you will love it.

I just sent him a link for a class! Maybe if I keep hinting he'll get it... but he doesn't do too well with hints!
It totally makes sense. I will try that next time. Well, I will tell Curtis to try that next time!
I agree! These cameras are crazy complicated!
Apparently I combined her outfits into one outfit in my head. Craziest thing. I think I might be losing it!
Thank you, Tashia. We definitely had to save up for a camera, but I think it's a worthy investment!
Play went awesome! I am going to get the video editing, and MAYBE add a spoken intro- not sure if I'm ready to share my Southern accent with y'all ;)
I definitely need a new lens. Lots of people use that 50mm lens, and it's not expensive (comparatively speaking), but I just can't go around dropping $120 on a lens. It's on my birthday list though!
Thank you so much for commenting Brooke! And thanks for the advice. I think I have the apeture part down, I just need to figure out how to get a faster exposure time. Thank you!!
I think a camera tripod would also help with the blurriness. If your photo was taken at night, or indoors and the whole image is blurry, then the camera moved while the shutter was open.
The camera will leave the shutter open for longer when there is not much light around, or if you change the exposure settings. When the shutter is open for longer, tiny movements of the camera can cause the whole photo to become blurry. Even small movements like releasing your finger from the shutter button or your breathing can cause it. Using a tripod is an easy fix for this, as it stabilizes the camera.
Well that makes perfect sense! Thanks, Erin! I actually have a tripod, so I will definitely start employing it!
I bought this fancy camera and my husband tried to take my outfit pictures with it... I looked horrendous. I mean there's no way I look that bad in real life. We stick with taking pictures with my iphone... not fancy, but he seems how to capture my true self better with the iphone!
LOL!!! I know how you feel. I try to get all pro over here with the blog photos and *fail*! Oh well at least you got some of the pics to go well.
You look lovely and I think that skirt is worth repeating :) Happy Weekend!
Ha ha, you're hilarious, and thank you for the sweet compliment! I have a little secret though...shhh, don't tell anyone, but I adjust the brightness of my photos in photoshop. We really have no idea how to use our camera, or photoshop for that matter. The only thing I really know how to do on the camera is to shoot with a low aperature and increase the exposure to allow for more light. Then I have to use photoshop to resize my photos for my blog anyways, so I also adjust the brightness and crop the photos. You would be shocked how these two small, easy things in photoshop can make the world of difference.
You look fabulous in this outfit! I'm so in love with that printed skirt, and I really love it paired with orange! The flower in your hair is so pretty!

Super cute! I love every element of this outfit!
They have some great photography tips on Pinterest! You could always try that route first!
Oh my gosh Katie, you crack me up! As for the photography lessons I am a cheater and I edit my photos after the fact. My mother in law showed me how you can use pre-made actions in photoshop and then apply them to your photo. It does all the work for you and there are a million different options. If you want more info, you know where to find me ;) I wish I could help you with aperture and exposure settings and all the technical stuff but I have never learned myself :/ Good luck and if you find any good websites on it, please share :)

Thanks so much for the shout out, Katie! Though I have to agree with Jenny's comment, I do adjust in PS. Before, a quick auto contrast usually helped a lot but lately I've been playing with the levels. Photography is tricky and definitely takes a lot of practice! ;-)
Lovin' this fun printed skirt and hair flower!! ;-)
Um yes I totally hear you on the photography classes - I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to taking pics myself. I figure all in its own time. Loving your skirt, it looks great! :)
The patterned skirt is a great choice. Thanks to the optical effect, it doesn't let the eye focus too long on your sensitive area. The color of your tee suits you very well. The accessories are smart down to the choice of your earrings. You knew that you needed a skinny belt for a big volume skirt like that. You matched it with the perfect sandals. Good job. Since this particular ensemble for shapes and colors and pattern brings out all your assets you look really chick in it!
Don't worry too much about specific photography skills at this point. With a smart camera, all you need to do is to find the right functions. It might be about just a couple of clicks. You might want to simply ask a friend or/and study the manual for the necessary instructions on how to get a blurred background.

Oh girl you crack me up! Every time I come here I realize more and more that we're 'bruthas from another mutha.' Or something like that. I feel the same about photography, I'm so lost! My older brother took a few classes at a community college, so I'll ask him for help. And then he gets all technical and I'm lost (or tune him out) within 5 minutes. Or 2.
I was thinking of getting the Idiot's Guide to my camera...maybe that will help!
And I love this skirt, buying it RIGHT NOW.
Katie, I am trying to master my camera lately... and I think it all boils down to a little know-how and a fabulous lens. I actually did take a minor photography class recently, and can finally finagle my manual settings... but they pretty much told me I wouldn't get the blogger chic blurry background without a lens that has a lower aperture settings... just passing a log what I know (which is very little)
:)

Please read 'chic' for chick in my previous entry. :) I am phonetically challenged and being my own spell checker makes it even worse. I make the most hilarious phonetically induced spelling errors! I also think that I tend to put commas in all the wrong places.
You look really good and feminine on your pictures. You have the facial features of a movie star. And when you pick the right pieces and that happens most of the time, you look really photogenic.
Gorgeous look! Navy and orange are fun together, and the skirt's print reminds me of ocean waves. Love the rope belt, too. :)
Beautiful! I love your style. =)

How cute are you with that flower in your hair?! You just reminded me that I have a couple of flower clips hiding in a box somewhere. I need to dig those out & give them some wear time this summer :)

Literally my mom bought me a ton of these little cheap-o flowers at the Dollar Tree, but I just love them. Definitely fun for the summer!
Thank you so much!
It reminds me of waves too. I am loving this skirt!
I do that all the time, and I am a terrible proofreader :(
I definitely want a lower apeture lens and I can get one for about $120, but I'm trying to wait till my birthday. I just don't have that lying around, not with all the clothes I want to buy ;)
But you are right, practice is important!
We are soul sisters! I am just not technically minded at all. I am verbal! Clearly ;)
It was much easier once I asked a photographer friend for some pointers. I can't just read the manual, I need a personal tutor!
Practice makes perfect I guess. At least it's pretty fun practice!
I am terrified to get involved in PS! That's going to be a whole new can of worms to open! When I see people doing simple tutorials I get panicked- too complicated!
I guess I'm going to have to ask for PS for my birthday. And a class for that!!
Oh, definitely! I am always pinning and reading stuff. It can just get overwhelming for a non-tech person like me ;)
Thank you, Sarah! It has become a "go-to" outfit!
Brightness, eh?? Thanks for the tip! I've been messing around a little in the week since I posted this, and I am excited to show off some pics next week!
It can get super frustrating. Especially having a fancy camera you are scared of!
Ha! Interesting. He must be using it wrong, that's the only explanation! Make him take a class!
Definitely makes me want to ask for one for my birthday!
Thank you, Brooke. I had a friend show me how to do this, and it definitely made a difference!
Me too... A nice $100-300 lens is on my birthday list for August! Fingers crossed :)
