1. New Shape Sweaters- Dolman sleeves and boxy cuts are still going to be big for sweaters. Look for draping necklines, wide sleeves and asymmetric hems. My sweater collection had been lacking, but I did hit Eloquii up at the end of winter and got a few sweaters I am excited to wear should I ever see cooler weather! If you have limited yourself to plain pull-over sweaters, step out a little this season with something new and unexpected (Old Navy always has a great selection of inexpensive and trendy sweaters!).
2. Cross Body Handbags- Yes! I bough one of these babies last year at Kohl's and I loved it! I am thrilled that this small, utilitarian handbags will still be in style. They are great for everyday use, and once you've tried a cross-body style you'll understand why! They are cute and functional. I love them for travel or all-day shopping because they are light, they keep both your hands free, and they keep your valuables close to you. I have a basic camel-colored cross body bag, so I will be looking for one in a beautiful jewel tone for this fall!
3. Glitz before Six- I have to admit, I am most excited about this trend. Bring out the shimmer, glimmer, and sequins for day wear, not just after dark! Naturally you will be using small doses of "glitz", but a little goes a long way to added both texture and interest to your daily work wear. I have a subtly sequined top in a variety of gold shades that I will be able to layer, but I will absolutely be looking for other pieces to add to my collection. Maybe a sparkly blouse or loafers?
4. Metal Collars/Bib Necklaces- Statement Necklaces aren't going anywhere, but the shape is definitely changing. Bib and Collar necklaces in varying shades of metal will be big for fall. I found a great variety online at Forever 21, but I hesitated to buy one. I will have to try one on in person. I am a little unsure of this particular trend on me personally, but I am certainly willing to try!
5. Big, Chunky Watches- Over-sized, menswear-inspired wrist watches are going to be the guest of honor at the arm party this year, so even if you are having a party of one, make it this signature piece. Like the cross body handbag, chunky watches are the perfect mix of form and function. The most stylish pieces will be forged from warm rose gold, and I am on the lookout for an inexpensive version to add to my jewelry box (if you find some, let me know!).
6. Boots and Booties- Shine up all those boots and booties you bought last fall because they are right back on your feet for this fall! Last year I think I bought nearly every boot Old Navy offered. Equestrian inspired flat riding boots will still be big, and so will boots of every heel size and height. Booties will still be paired with everything from pants to skirts. I may venture into some higher heeled boots this fall, but standing all day is an important factor of my shoe-buying process!
So there you have it! These are the twelve things the "experts" say will be must fashionable for this upcoming fall season. Are you ready to go shopping yet? What will you be adding to your closet?

Hi Katie! Longtime reader first time commenter :) Love these trends, and when I saw the watch I just had to chime in. I just bought this chunky, rose gold tone piece from Macy's and LOVE it, and its only $30 bucks. I've worn it a day and already got compliments! (No, Macy's doesn't pay me haha). Again, thanks for a great post!

Yay boots! I don't get the shapeless sack sweaters, but I'm excited for any glimmer/shimmer/sparkle (the 7th grader in me never left) =)
I love crossbody bags and statement necklaces so I'm happy to see they're still sticking around for fall :)

I'll have to stock up on crossbody bags before they go out of style again. They are really the only purse that works for me. I'm glad I'll be able to find them in retail stores a while longer. (A few years ago, I could only get them on ebay or by scouring thrift stores!)
Cross body bags are basically my favorite thing ever. I take public transit everywhere so I like keeping my belongings close, but also having my hands free to hold my coffee and/ or just hold on while on the train. I'm already on the hunt for a pair of black leather wide calf riding boots. I got a cognac colored pair last year and wore them almost every day.
Oh I just love boots! I'm so excited! I have a question about Old Navy boots though-Do they run true to size? And for those of us with more muscular calves, do they do the all important pull up to the knee without the tourniquet effect? I like big oversize sweaters too, though as I'm big on top and slimmger on the bottom I wonder if it just makes that more obvious. However-I don't care. LOL! I'm not gonna look small and I might as well emphasize my nice legs, right? I love a bit of glitz for day as well! Thanks so much for checking this all out! I'm 45 and feeling a bit out of the loop, as well as not being a small size, so I often feel I'm walking a high wire with finding something appropriate to wear.
Love love love crossbody bags....
Im excited about "Glitz before Six". I have an Eloquii black sequin skirt Im dying to wear to work! While Im excited, Im alittle hesitant but Im gonna do it. Ill post the outfit when I wear it! Also happy I can still rock my favorite booties from last year!
Target has rose gold watches at really good price points. I've recently bought a mint colored one and a bone colored one from there for $12-$14 each! Gotta love Target! Or if you want a little higher quality, I LOVE my rose gold Stella watch from Fossil. So obsessed with rose gold this season!
Eep! SO excited that chunky watches are gonna be "in"... I just bought myself one, not because I knew, but because I've just fallen in love with the look. :)
Oh man, more shopping here I come! I totally need a new pair of boots. Ok, maybe not need.. but still. And anything that sparkles and has sequins on it, is most def a must have! :)
xo, Yi-chia
Agreed. Definitely go to Target. I got a great rose gold watch for $14.99!!
It's funny because there are a lot of things that are going to be "big" for fall that I wouldn't be caught dead wearing. I guess we will just have to see how it goes--the only one of those things that I can definitely imagine myself going for is a metal bib collar necklace of some sort, and that's IF I find one that satisfies my picky aesthetic, haha. Oh, wait, and sequins. But I already do that.
I love the sweater but the shoes shes wearing are gorgeous!
Right?! I really want to add leopard print pumps to my shoe collection!
It's interesting how different style can be (and great!). I could totally see you rocking a metal collar, and I would feel so foolish in one!
I agree with you on both parts! I am slowing (and sneakily) doing my fall shopping!
I've always loved big watches too, but I seriously haven't worn a watch in over five years. I'm changing that THIS fall!!
I love rose gold too! Thanks for the tip- I am going to Target TOMORROW!
Thanks, Katie!
That's a perfect example of Glitz before Six! I can't wait to see that blogged and thinking about it makes me realize that a black sequin skirt is the perfect way to introduce glitz to your work wardrobe!
Me too! They are so handy, so I'm glad I can have something handy AND stylish!
I feel like I have pretty wide calves and I wear them fine- if you look back in my pics from last fall you can see me wearing them with skirts and skinny jeans (I wore them A LOT). I did size up a whole size to give me room to wear socks which is what I prefer to do, and I liked them a size bigger truth be told- more wiggle room for my toes. I also put insoles in for extra arch support. When you are buying $30 boots sometimes you need extra cushioning!
Do not feel out of the loop and never hesitate to ask!
That's exactly why I love cross body bags too! Well not the transit, but the hands free stuff! I got both of my pairs at Old Navy, though one day I'd like to invest in nicer ones :)
Stock up! Really I don't think I care if they go out of style- they are so handy!!
Me too, Sharon! Me too!
Yeah, I don't think the sweaters are gonna do much for my shape, but I'm excited about most everything else!
Mary Rose, thank you so much for reading and for commenting! I've already got your link open and that's exactly what I wanted! Thank you so much!!
Oh, definitely buying a couple of pairs!
I love metal bib collar necklace.Cant wait to have one.
Armbandjes Baby
I was just thinking about buying seperates this morning and how I needed less dresses! Boots, skinnies, scarves, blazers, v-neck slouchy sweaters, shimmer, chunky gold necklaces... I need it all. I have it now, but I can always use more. ;)
I am SO excited to add some sparkle to my wardrobe and get some sequined pieces. I love the idea of mixing sequins with chambray for a relaxed, daytime look!
Okay, before I get sidetracked - Kate from The Small Things blog has a watch just like the ones you showed and she got it from Target. She says she loves it and she loves it soo much it was part of a giveaway she did for her readers on her birthday.
Anyhoo, some great fashion ideas for Fall! I was super stoked that, just yesterday, I scored a real leather crossbody bag with a wallet for $5!!! On Monday I had been out with my mother-in-law and was looking at some, but there were too pricey for me. Then yesterday I was looking on Kijiji, Canada's version of Craig's list (yes we have Craiglist too), that's much better than Craig's list, and came across a listing for it. The best part, the house I had to go to pick it up was nearly right around the corner from me. That NEVER happens. Usually I'll see something I want and find out it's all the way across the city. Our city is massive, so I don't drive was down south for anything! Well maybe Ikea once a year. ; )
And I'll admit I was teary watching the girls win gold last night. I love the gymnastics too! The balance beam kind of terrifies me! What if the landed wrong? They could break their neck!

Yay to glitz before 6! Love this - and totally excited for drapey and loose sweaters... its like wearing a giant blanket all day :)

Haha, totally have to get boots since I live in MN! Love the crossbody bags too, they are so easy to carry and the long straps are chic.

Love these trends! Most especially the shiny, sequin-y, glittery tops! :D I'm all for sparkle!
http://thebelatedbloomer.blogspot.com
Me too! That's what I'm looking for right now!
Yeah, I probably don't *need* boots because we have pretty mild winters, but that's not stopping me!
I think those are the two I am most exciting about. I love being comfortable!
I am checking out Target's watches tomorrow! Sounds like you had an awesome find. I rarely think about CraigsList(though we did sell my car on it a few years ago, and it was only posted for a few hours). Balance Beam is definitely scary. Me mom was a state champion in gymnastics back in the seventies, and she's also talking about how crazy the tricks and routines are now... And you can look at Youtube videos even from 96 and see how much crazier it is now. Amazing!
Oh, man! That would be beautiful... You never said that... because when I do it, I don't want to be copying ;)
Yea, I probably need to inventory my closet before buying anything, but it's way more fun to buy new stuff!
Well, I've seen them at all price points, so you will definitely have your choice this fall!
I have a few pairs of knee-high boots, which I love, but I have gone bootie crazy this year! Wait, that sounded weird.
xo,
Hannah
