Tunesday Tuesday: "Some Nights"

"Some nights I wish that my lips could build a castle/ Some nights I wish they'd just fall off"- Fun. "Some Nights"

So I couldn't decide in this blog if I wanted to talk about when I say stupid things (which happens way more often than it should) or if I wanted to talk about a night in the life of me. Stupid things won out, as usual. I am literally the queen of sticking my foot in my mouth.

Dress- Old Navy (similar) Sandals- Sonoma Life + Style for Kohl's
Belt- New York and Co. (similar)

I am not intentionally insensitive- I honestly think my mouth moves faster than my brain. This results in me spending a lot of time wishing I could just learn to keep my mouth shut, or that my lips would just fall off.

Sometimes they are funny, "That's what she said" moments. Like the time I told a class, while describe the hamburger method of paragraphing writing (you don't want to know), that their paragraph should get meatier as they go down it. Not funny you say? Say it out loud to thirty tenth graders, they will get it.

Sometimes my jaws getting to flapping and I say things that are totally inappropriate for the situation. Like the time I visited a friend whose father was dying and said to her, "I felt so sick to my stomach that I wanted to die." Really, Katie? Really?! Man, did I apologize for that!

The moral of the story is that I need to listen more and talk less, I think. Or think before I speak. Or lock up my lips and throw away the keys.

i love a denim/tan combination, classic and i love (see! i shouldn't love it) you have 'foot in mouth' its a problem i have had for years, i feel at times i am suffering alone!! i have been really really absolutely unintentionally eye wateringly excrutiatingly awful at times and its not going away either, i also realised my only solution for me is to shut up and listen (you are way more eloquent!) x

You are so not the only person who says stupid things! Recently, I was talking to my cousin about kids and I explained that I am done having children because I don't want to be pregnant after 35 (I had some complications with both of my pregnancies in my 20s - I don't want the additional risks). Since I am almost 34 and have no desire to be pregnant, I am done. Why was this stupid? We were at a baby shower for my older sister. She's 41. Oops!
Where is you jewelry from? I've been getting into brass / bronze jewelry recently :)

Haha, I'm pretty quiet, and tend to over think what I say, at least with people I don't know, but my best friend is fantastic at just saying what comes to her mind. Luckily every one just finds it endearing, and I'm sure the people you know feels the same way. You look really pretty in these photos xo

Love your chambray dress! I wish I could find one...they are so versatile. You love very pretty.

LOL...I used to be the queen of sticking my entire foot in my mouth. Unfortunately it cost me a few friends & opportunities. Over the years Ive learned to be more sensitive and think before I opened my mouth. It has served me well & saved alot of constant apologizing.

Love the dress! The belt is great with it and looks like it came with the dress. Another great post!

Cute and funny post, and I love that song.

Oh sister you are not alone in this! I always feel like I need to listen more and talk less. One time, when I was teaching an 8th grade music class, one of my girls decided to get you and do a little booty dance. And do you know what I said? Sometime along the lines of... "E, there's no pole here so stop." Why yes, I did just allude to my 8th grade student acting like a pole dancer.

Seriously surprised that I didn't get sacked that day.

I lack the brain-mouth filter sometimes too. Thankfully I don't work with children, but I have definitely called out applicants for stupid things they've done in the interview process when I maybe shouldn't have. Love the chambray shirt dress. I can't wait to wear mine. It is 3/4 sleeved and pretty thick so I don't think I'll be wearing it until it gets a little cooler.

Haha Katie! I'm pretty good at listening (I am a social worker after all) but my mouth HAS gotten me into trouble before, usually when I'm angry and my fiesty side comes out.

Your chambray dress is so cute...I love the little ruffle detail!

Ha ha ha! I hate to laugh, but it's so funny! I have a co-worker like that, and it's pretty much daily that we laugh at her too. You look fabulous in this chambray dress. I have one from years ago, but it doesn't feel very modern. This is inspiring me to buy a new one!

One of my besties has this problem. She opens her mouth before she thinks. We joke that she was born without that sensor that tells a sane person "NO". It's funny stuff! She is always a hoot to be around.

I love this dress on you! You look so effortlessly beautiful! I have this dress, too. I usually pair it with a brown belt, too, but I haven't tried the bronze jewelry. May have to try it.

At least you are looking fabulous while sticking your foot in your mouth! Two of the closest people to me do the same thing.. one is my husband and the other my best friend, haha. So I'm totally cool with it!

I totally understand. I often get bad cases of word vomit! I do know several friends that are cursed with it as well so at least I'm in good company there! lol

I love that chambray dress! Looks so cute. Does it have pockets?

Katie - I will never ever look at that hamburger paragraphing idea the same way again. LOL. :) Love the chambray dress and how you accessorized. :)

Love this post! First, love the photos! Second, I agree that this is advice for everyone... i oftentimes put my foot in my mouth and think “i can’t believe i just said that”... or have to explain, “ah thats not what i meant!"

or become a comedian cause you are too funny! And cute... loving your chambray!

Ha, thanks! One of my friends did an amateur stand-up comedy night, and I told my husband I wanted to do it next time. But he said no! ;) Seriously, one day I will write a blog of TWSS things I've said to tenth graders. So mortifying!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Glad to know I'm not the only one- that's a true relief! And thank you so much for the kind words!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Me either, Carrie! I wish you could have been there. I look up and they are all silent, but wildly exchanging glances. They were too afraid to laugh at it (I rule with an iron fist!), but they did after I just shook my head and then hid my face. This is a weekly occurrence!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

No pockets :/ That's the only reason I don't wear it every day!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Yay! I'm not the only one :)

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Good to know that we can continue to get along! You'll just have to forgive me in advance!

It's nice to have someone with me- to laugh at me and make me laugh! Thank you, Lynne!

Interesting is the right word!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Don't you love this dress? I wish it came in other colors. I just love the fit of it and the flare of the skirt :)

I don't think I'm a hoot. I am afraid I'm one of those people who makes everything really awkward!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Thank you, Savannah!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I don't mind you laughing at it. I have to laugh too, even though it's usually from embarrassment or to make people laugh :)

I am telling you to immediately buy a chambray dress- I need to see you style one and give me some ideas!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Ooh, when I'm angry, watch out! My words are deadly weapons.

I definitely need to work on my listening skills. I hate people who seem to never be listening. They just are talking about themselves to themselves!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I can't wait to see you styles your dress- I need some inspiration! It's tough to not call people out when they do stupid things, I know!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

See, I would have said the same exact thing! It would have just slipped out before I could even think about the "appropriate" way to respond!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Thank you! I love the song too. It's great :)

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I definitely need to work on it! I could see how it could cost you friendships and opportunities, even though you didn't mean it.

Thank you :)

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I looked for one all last summer and I was thrilled to find this one. They are tough to find!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Well, that makes me feel better. It's never really anything mean, so don't think I'm hurting feelings... At least I hope not! And thank you so much, the sun was in a really good position for these photos!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Yes! That's exactly the kind of comment I would make. Exactly.

The jewelry is super old- I honestly don't even know where it's from. I think Burke's? However, I've gotten several good pieces from Maurice's lately!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

You are not alone, I promise! And I think as long as it's not intentional, then you are okay.

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Well, I do at least try to look good while I am embarrassing myself!

Thank you so much, Kemi!

I am also pretty awesome at saying things at inappropriate times OR saying inappropriate things. Hehe. But I don't get easily embarrassed, so it's all cool.

The hamburger method definitely shouldn't be taught to high-school classes because that is just too much! :D Definitely that's what she said material.

I am always sticking my foot in my mouth as well, so don't sweat it! Love this dress on you, and that belt is such a pretty color :)

I love this outfit on you! Chambray with a tan belt--I love that color combo. I also stick my foot in my mouth all the time! And what's worse--up front on a mic at church in front of 400 people. HA. I think they're used to it now, though...? I hope...

Haha! I am the queen of saying things without thinking enough. Like the time I talked about a guy "robbing the craddle" and then realized that a couple across from me was that exact situation. Man. That was awkward. And in general I talk to loud. Which is never pleasant. Haha!

Katie,

I wonder about the 10th graders who have sex on their minds and are also vegetarians. They wouldn't know if they wanted to laugh hysterically or be offended. Why didn't I have teachers like you? It would have made high school a lot more fun.
