Back in July when I was writing about fall fashion, I expressed super-excitement for the "Glitz Before Six" trend cropping up. Sequins, sparklies and shinies for daytime? Sign me up! I decided to do the "responsible" thing and shop my closet first before buying something. And after a good about of digging, I found this beauty.
I bought this sequined tank last year for a bachelorette party, and truthfully I don't think I ever wore it. I wish I knew more about photographing sequins, so you could see the sparkle, but I don't. Any tips? This top is completely covered in sequins- gold, bronze, cream, light pink. It was a cheap-o from a clothing store called Cato's (the stores seem to be centralized in the Midwest and Southeast of the US), but the quality is pretty top notch. That's important for something as delicate as sequins. The sequined part is a mesh overlay and the sequins are securely sewn on- I'm not sure how a machine can be so precise, but there's not a single loose sequin in the bunch.
Because this is such a neutral palette, the sequins aren't super flashy or over the top. A simple tank like this is an easy way to introduce some "Glitz Before Six" into your daily work wardrobe. You don't have to spend a lot, but you definitely want to pay attention to the quality of the piece. Make sure the sequins are secure. You don't want any loose ones to fall off. And be sure to treat your top kindly. I do machine wash this one (inside out and on a short, delicate cycle), but you may want to hand wash to be super safe. For the record, I will never, ever hand wash anything I own. It's kinda a pre-requisite.
I completed the look with gold and rose gold accessories, including this lovely little gem from the Maya Brenner Designs (won in a giveaway hosted by The Average Girl's Guide). It is quickly becoming my favorite understated piece. I wear it all the time and usually forget it's there. Love it!
How are you incorporating glitz this fall?

Glad this trend is sticking around because who doesn't love sparkly? That necklace you won is SO cute!

I love the sequins, you look fabulous. I don't usually hand wash things either, even if it says hand wash only. I really love the gold jewelry!

Glitz before six!! I love that! I also really love your top! I don't think I have anything glitzy in my closet but now I want to buy something with a little sparkle.
What a timely post! I found this sparkly top at Ross yesterday and I'm wearing it at work way before six. Love your blog!
You look super cute! I'm really excited about this trend because of a cardigan I already own. It's deep purple and has sequin stripes on it. I bought it for my husband's company Christmas party in 2009 (I think) and I've rarely worn it since. But this fall/winter I've decided to wear the heck out of it! Sparkles are in, the shape is actually very basic, and I figure if I keep the rest of the outfit simple I'll be good to go. :)
Very cute! Can you tell us where you got your pants, too? I got a new job (yay) but we're not allowed to wear jeans, even on Fridays. Yours look more like trouser jeans and as if I could get away with them. Thank you for the info!
Yes! I'm so sorry- I got them at Old Navy. They are trouser jeans and I love them. I did have to have them hemmed because they were super long, but the fit and color is awesome :)
That's going to be perfect for fall- and such a lovely color for brunettes!
Dang! I couldn't see a picture, but I am so happy to hear someone else was sparkling today!!
What?!? Old Navy has some cute options.... Just saying
I do not have the patience to hand wash! All that rinsing and junk. I have blogs to read and TV to watch ;)
I am too! And thank you so much- I struggled to pick a little but finally decided on F for my last name!
Thanks, Jill!
My fave day to wear glitter is on Mondays... because, really, that's when you need it the most!
Cheers,
Emily

Katie, would you believe I don't own anything with sequins? But I admit that I would love to buy any piece that would allow me to wear "glitz before six." I think it was great to pair your tank with a neutral palette--this seems like the perfect way for a shy fashion girl like myself to let loose! ha! Methinks I'll be on the look out for a simple tank like yours! :)
Love the sequins, and your necklace is so pretty! I love tiny delicate necklaces like that.
You look so fabulous and chic in this outfit! I totally agree with wearing sequins during the day! I'm terrible at photographing sequins too. I LOVE that necklace! I've wanted it for a while now, but have yet to splurge on myself. Looks great on you.

That's such a pretty sequin top (and I like how it's not over the top sparkly)! For photographing them, I think you probably need a direct light source to bounce off the sequins, whether it's sun or artificial.
I like Cato's too! It's always hit and miss but when I find stuff, it's always a lot of stuff! Really loving the sequins and saucy lip color on you! I am doing the same thing. Trouser or skinnies with a couple of sparkly tanks and a blazer. It's the only way I feel comfortable wearing it during the day!
This is the cutest ever understated jewelry piece! I adore it! And agreed on the glitz before six thing...I like how it's kinda tied in with the 20s coming back :)

Love the tank! You can definitely wear that during the day. I have a black sequin skirt Im thinking about giving a try next week. Youve inspired me!
Ha! I think I have those, then. All my jeans come from Old Navy. I always have to get the petite, and if they don't come in petite, I tend to try to make them draw up in the dryer. I'm cheap! Thanks, Katie!
I have not heard about this Glitz before six trend you speak of, but I'm all in! I love a little daytime glamour :) I also love your dainty necklace, that too is another one of my favorite trends :)

"Glitz Before Six" is kind of my motto. lol If it sparkles, I wear it. I usually stock up on sequined tops around the holidays so I have plenty for year-round. One of the nicer names my mom ever called me was a crow, because I am attracted to shiny things!
There are so many sequined, sparkling tops out right now. I am really struggling. I want them all.
And damn about your mom. I remember talking about her before but geez!
I've never felt dainty enough for a dainty necklace- I feel like you need to be waif-like, but whatever. I am too old to worry about that!
I remember you talking about the black skirt- I've been trying to find one since then! I can't wait to see what you do with it!
Definitely has a Great Gatsby vibe to it!
That's exactly how I feel about Cato's. I always get great shoes there, but they are NEVER comfortable!
I'm going to try direct light next time! Thanks!
I was really excited to win the necklace, because I agree, it would have been tough to justify spending the money. However you do have a birthday soon, don't you?
Thank you, Lily!
Bella- there are SOOOOO many places selling sequined tanks right now. New York and Co. has some gorgeous options- lots of soft colors! Check it out.
AMEN! Monday is when I go all out- start the week off with a bang!
Me, too! I cannot justify spending more than $30 bucks on anything!!
I keep checking out the Sequin Dolman Top from Lane Bryant, but I need to go look at it in store. Tis the season for stocking up on sequined stuffs!! :-)
