Burning the Candle

I feel like I have gotten really good at concealing the dark shadows that are always present under my eyes these days. It seems like I cannot get enough sleep, not enough hours in the day,  always something else to do. I have so much I want to do (and need to do and have to do) that sometimes I just feel like I am running around in circles.

Typical day starts at 5:45. I'm out of bed and rushing to get ready for the day. Leave home by 7:00 at the very latest to get to work by 7:30. Work all day (with teens no less!), hopefully leaving school by 4:00- next week will be the exception because I have two after-school meetings AND Open House! Gym by 4:30 for an hour. Home, shower, start dinner, crash. Add to that days when I need to go to the grocery store or take photos or pick Sean up because Curtis has a late meeting and it's no wonder I am ready for bed by 6:00 most nights.

Blouse- Old Navy (last year- sorry!)
Corduroy Pencil Skirt- Old Navy
Heels- Kohl's (super old. super sorry.)

Sorry, it sounds like I am complaining. I'm not completely. I am really enjoying my classes. We started reading The Scarlet Letter this week, and it is truly one of my favorite novels to teach. I just love it so much, and it is so exciting to get teenagers really into it. I am newspaper sponsor and we are about to unveil a new web version of the paper. That is something I've had in the works for several years now, so I can't wait for the big reveal. In addition to all of that, I am creating and sponsoring an anti-bullying club at the high school. Again- there are not enough hours in the day.

And Sean. Bless his heart. He is so handsome and smart and funny. He is a fabulous eater and loves school. He hates sleeping. So much that it sometimes takes us two hours to get him to sleep, only to find him sneaking into our bed an hour later. He is tired and grumpy. We are tired and grumpy. I haven't watched X-Files all week (going through Mulder withdrawals as I write!). My mom offered to keep Sean tonight, and I am so thankful and excited.

Sleeping late. And X-Files. Yes, please.

You have quite the busy schedule! I admire people that work full time, have children, and still manage to squeeze in time to blog! I'm exhausted just thinking about it :) Have a great weekend, Katie!

It will get better, I promise! Kids grow up, turn into teenagers, and pretty much sleep whenever they're home! It's great! Your vibrant outfit definitely dispells any suspicion that you might be exhausted though, and it looks great on you. I've kept meaning to ask-what lipcolors do you use? Your lips are always gorgeous, no "off" shades-HOW do you DO that? I can't ever seem to find a shade that doesn't look weird once I've bought it and given it a loving home. They all turn on me.

Wao, that sure DOES sound like a busy schedule!! I know the feeling though, I feel that I have a million projects I want to accomplish but there just isn't enough time in a day to do them all. You are looking beautiful as always too, love the bright yellow!

Aww, at least it's the weekend right. If it makes you feel better, my husband used to work 80 hours a week, including weekends. Now he still gets up at 5:30 and doesn't get home till 6:30 from work. And then I make him cook me dinner, haha. :)

I'm totally loving your shirt, so cute! Love the vibrant yellow!

I don't know how you do it!?! My life seems like a vacation compared to yours, and yet I still find time to complain about it :/ My father in law has a phrase that haunts me in the wee hours of the morning, he always says, "you can sleep when you're dead!" I love the phrase, but wish I wasn't so damn tired while I'm alive :D I envy those people (my husband) who only need 4-5 hours sleep a night, I need the full 8 and then some! I am so jealous that in spite of your busy schedule, you still manage to make it to the gym... I have no excuse! Keep on trucking though, it will all pay off!! I love your blouse, even if it is from last year ;) The print is adorable!!

I have recently started a wildlife
intern position thru Auburn University. I am up at 5am and usually in bed by
8-8:30. I am helping an graduate student with her research on black bears in
Northeast Alabama. It is a lot of hiking around. But it is rewarding when we
find signs from the bears or picture/video from our wildlife camera. It may not
be working with teenagers all day and it is not glamorous by any means, but I
am enjoying the internship immensely.

I love this outfit! I wanted that
shirt, but it just didn’t fit like I wanted it too. I wish Old Navy’s sizing wasn’t
so all over the place.

Wow, how can I ever complain about anything? Haha you are just insanely busy, can't believe you pack so much into your weeks. And good for you for the anti-bullying initiative at school, there could not be a more important thing to focus on nowadays. And as usual, you look stunning - those bright blues and yellows always look so beautiful on you!

I am so passionate about stopping bullying, so I am super-excited to get this club rolling. I think it's going to be fantastic, and the kids are very excited. Thank you so much, Alex!

Thank you! I love mustard- such a great color. And you are completely right. Teaching never ends. Maybe if I planned better I wouldn't always feel so busy!

Awww, thank you so much. Sometimes I feel that I'm doing a lot, but not doing any of it particularly well! ;)

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Sounds like a pretty awesome internship, but also very tiring! Kinda scary to imagine bloack bears in Alabama- guess I am stupid.

I agree about the fit of the shirt. I couldn't decide if I needed to go down a size. That is one thing I totally hate about Old Navy!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I LOVE lists!
1. I'm obsessed with birds. I couldn't resist.
2. Such a wonderful book. It takes the kids a few chapters to get into it (because of the density of Hawthorne's narrative), but once they get going they love the scandal and the mystery.
3. Right?! He's a totally hottie. I love episodes when he gets all bad ass!
4. I miss summer SOOOO much. I am busy, but it's all good stuff- so I guess I shouldn't commplain too much!
5. Thank you so much!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Thank you, Cassandra. I wish I could be disciplined enough to go before work, but that's not going to happen!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I am a real freak about sleep. If I am not in bed by 10 PM I start panicking. I need 8 and then some too. And if I have trouble falling asleep I just worry and stress that my whole day is going to be terrible. I have major sleep issues.

I hate going to the gym. I would much rather take a nap, but I have finally gotten to the point that if I don't go, I feel totally guilty. So I guess that's a good thing....

Exactly. There's so much to do but so little time. I try to prioritize and make lists, but they usually don't help!

I love lying with him when he's so cuddly and loving, but not for two hours! I know I will miss it when it's gone, so I try not to get too annoyed. I decided if I wore something bright it would distract from how tired I was.

And I am doing a lip stick post later this week!

Hi, I'm mostly a lurker, also a teacher, and I love your style. I'd looked at those colored cord skirts online at Old Navy and would love your opinion on the quality and fit of them...I can usually take the xxl 20 in the regular line or the 2xl in the plus line, but I find their sizing is all over the place. I'd love to know how that skirt fits before ordering.

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I feel you on that one! That's the main pitfall of Old Navy. I wish I had sized down (from an 18 to a 16) because the skirt is generous and stretchy. I think the quality is great- it[s very light-weight, has a nice hidden zipper, the colors are lovely. I will also tell you this- the skirts are cheaper in store, unless you have a coupon code to use online. Good luck- hope this helps.

Audrey @ Putting Me Together said...

Great outfit! But of course, I'm obsessed with yellow right now. Hope you are surviving/have survived the craziness. I'm quite behind on blogs because I've had my own dose of crazy!

Jennifer Johnson said...

Thanks, I'll try to hit up a store this weekend...sounds like the straight-sized one will fit.

You do have a lot on your plate but it appears you are managing it beautifully and looking gorgeous in the process! I love the idea of the anti-bullying club! How in the world, pray tell, do you have energy for the gym? You are my hero! Most days, my walks with Roxy are what I classify as exercise! Love the little birds on your shirt and that last shot! :)
