Pencils and Peplums

As promised I have been trying to focus on separates for this season instead of buying ten thousand dresses like I did last fall. I love dresses. I've blogged about them quite often, but separates offer a versatility the dresses do not.

Today I am combining two big trends from summer that are carrying over into the fall- pencil skirts and peplum (hence the super clever blog title today). This is my first foray into the world of peplum, a trend I have been hesitant to try because of my ample apple shape. I was afraid the empire cut of the top and the wide peplum might make me look just the slightest bit 6 - 7 months pregnant. That is not the  fashion statement I was going for!

Despite the maternity top feel (and you know how I love maternity clothes!), I liked this outfit. It feels very sophisticated and bold. I like the curve of the silhouette, though I think I will look for a smaller peplum next time. Curtis loved it because of the houndstooth print (huge Alabama football fan), and, well,  probably because it was very form-fitting

Are you taking peplum into your fall wardrobe? Do you pair peplum with pants?

Looks nice on you and flatters your shape. I love peplums....the style and the fact that they help widen my non existent hips

I had a peplum top but returned it. I may look for another with a better fit. i like yours. Are pencils skirts really a trend? I thought they have always been "in style".

I cannot find a peplum top that doesn't make me look like I have a massive belly, I think it might be one of those trends I'm better off not following, sigh. I love them on you though, you look so sophisticated! I love the pattern and the colour is great on you. I want to make more of an effort to wear seperates as well, but dresses are just so easy I can't get away from them xo

Just bought my first peplum thanks to you introducing me to Forever 21, which I had assumed was not for us old people. Waiting for it to arrive. I too had been scared it'd make me look prego!

that was my peplum problem! loved them but the bodice tended to be short so the peplum sat quite high, sad sad times until i finally found a jersey one which fitted - she is called betty rubble and is a leopardskin wonder, i love your peplum too and with a pencil skirt is like a 50's bombshell! x sandra

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I LOVE peplums! That being said, I still haven't found one that I'm willing to commit to. Well, I have, but I just don't have the finances at the moment. I think that's the great thing about trends: they allow us to experiment with fahion, try new things, and find a way to incorporate them into our long term/real life wardrobe.
I think this outfit looks amazing on you, I don't get a maternity vibe at all. It almost has a little retro vibe to it (must be the houndstooth) and really enhances your curves. The peplum acts like a flirty little ruffle, nothing to argue with there!

I was late jumping on the peplum bandwagon, but I'm sort of loving it now. Your peplum is to die for! The red color looks so damn good on you.

I think this is one of those that you have to tweak to fit your own personal style and shape-I think you chose really well for this one, You've got it in your best colors (you look wonderful in red and black both), the neckline is gorgeous as well. I am not sure it's the BEST ever silhouette one could wear, BUT, if you pick the best color and highlight your best features, that fact that the shape of it isn't absolutely ideal kind of fades into a non-issue, if you see what I mean.

Love this look. Pencil skirts are so perfect on you, and the colors are great for the summer to fall transition.

I think you look incredibly glamorous! I'm definitely carrying the peplum into the fall, because I bought a top that I don't think I've quite gotten the use out of to justify buying it. ;) Hope school is going well - you'll have to give me an update when you can!

So I haven't had much luck with peplum until recently, I bought a peplum dress [Saturday, actually!] I totally LOVE it! It fits great and I can't wait to wear it. I just wish the weather will cool down enough!! I'm going to try to find a peplum shirt that doesn't make me look like I am 12!

Love this look on you! The shirt actually cinches your waist and gives you an hourglass figure - ooh la la :-)

I gave the peplum a go. I'm a fan, but it was difficult finding the right peplum for me. I think if you belted this (maybe w/a cigarette pant) it might look very cute. I've tried a peplum w/pants, but the peplum was too small and it was blah. I think it may work w/your top though. Very cute look!

This outfit looks great on you! I love the red houndstooth print and I am currently obsessed with peplum! You can definitely wear it with pants, that top would look super cute paired with some dark skinny jeans!

Laurel Walker said...

I have been hesitant to try the peplum... if I find a good fit, I may give it a go. Personally, I really like the way this top fits and flatters your curves. Less maternity, more fashion-y, in my book. I would have shied away at the print but that seems to be working for you (and not against!) because they houndstooth flows with your body. You look absolutely knock-out va-va-voom!

I love the peplum look. I've been wanting to try it myself, but I can't seem to find one I like. The ones I have found in my size are strapless, have cap sleeves, or are a weird pattern. These are features I know just don't look right on me.
YOU, however, look super cute in this. I'd be curious to see how a smaller peplum would change the look.

CUTE! I have seen some really cute peplum items of clothing on the internet lately. I don't think I am going to try the peplum look, plus I don't have any money to spend on clothing at the moment.

I think that peplum looks absolutely perfect on you! It's so lady-like and sophisticated. Just gorgeous! I'm definitely LOVING peplum this year!

When I look at this, I don't see maternity at all! I think it looks really classy and flattering!!!

I think that many people who try out the peplum top are surprised to find it so flattering (despite the extra fabric)... I think it is the fit & flare shape... and you look stunning in yours! Loving the houndstooth too

I love dresses too! It's hard to branch out :/ I do love that you are doing a fun houndstooth in a peplum!! Peplums are my favorite right now :)

Carrie said...

You look smashing - the houndstooth in red and black is so chic! I think the silhouette is really flattering on you and it's completely professional yet still eye-catching and full of verve. :)

Love the peplum top on you! And you have amazing legs so that skirt is just highliting them even more! I have not gotten into peplum yet. It's just not doing it for me. I have not had any "need it right now" feelings about it. Is that weird? Anyway, you look fantastic!

I think the high waist gives you a nice hourglass silhouette. Very cute outfit.

You look so sophisticated and classic... it's as if you're channeling your inner Audrey Hepburn. Very pretty! Personally, I adore peplum tops and I would wear them every single day if I could! I carry a lot of my weight in my midsection and l like how peplums give me more of a curvy, hourglass shape. And to answer your question... yes, I will wear them with pants. I try to pair them with a skinny leg jean or slim dress pants for work to balance out the fullness of the top. :)

I carry my weight in my middle too, and that's why I was so excited about the peplum trend! And I was thinking about skinny jeans or slim pants to get the right silhouette!

Thank you, Shelley!

No, I get what you mean. It was really the houndstooth that won me over- the peplum was just an added bonus. It was definitely comfortable- I didn't have to worry about my gut hanging out!

Thank you so much Carrie! I feel like if I ever write a book- this needs to be a review blurb on the book! Full of verve! Yes! :)

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I am trying really hard. When I shop online or go in stores, I will NOT let myself look at the dresses. It's too tempting!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I agree 100%. The fit on the top keeps it from being boxy, but then the peplum smooths out my "problem area"! :)

Thank you, Mandy!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I'm certainly looking for more!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

I'm not sure how long this trend will last, so I understand why you are hesitant. I also totally get the money issue as well!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Eek! I wouldn't want strapless or cap sleeve either. Does that look good on anyone?@?

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Thank you, Laurel! I didn't even think twice about the loudness of the houndstooth- I just loved it. Although I definitely get that it wouldn't be everyone's choice!!

Hems for Her, a.k.a. Katie said...

Thank you so much, Miranda! I can't wait to try it with some skinny jeans!

Katie, I'm still catching up on blog-reading after my daughter's recent hospitalization, and am mostly lurking to catch up, but I had to stop in late to the peplum party and say, "WOW!" Super-flattering look and color. I can't tell you how many times I have picked up a great top in a store, only to find out it was maternity wear, and been very disappointed because it was so darned pretty :P

Katha Strophe said...

I love this so much, Katie! You look absolutely radiant. The houndstooth print looks so fantastic!

I haven't bought a peplum top yet, but I love the shape a lot.
