I'm Thinking Arby's... and Another Striped Dress

This dress cost $8- about the same as my favorite meal at Arby's (which is a #17 with a Diet Dr. Pepper, in case you were wondering)- and even though I just posted a striped dress on Monday, I couldn't resist wearing this out to dinner the other night. That's probably a blogging faux pas, but when we are talking about dinner and a new dress, forget about blogger etiquette.

Dress- Old Navy
Peep Toe Wedges- Kohls
Ritz Necklace- Premier Designs
Sunglasses- Old Navy (similar)

I've been openly complaining about Old Navy and the quality of their dresses, but I am pleased to share that this cutie is a nice weight jersey and I think it's great, and it's a great value. It also comes in a black and white stripe, which I also bought. I've talked about big girls wearing horizontal stripes before, and I stand by the fact that I see no problem with it. The common perception is "horizontal stripes make you look wider, and what big woman wants to look wider?"

I don't get that at all. Y'all, I'm wide. Wearing or not wearing stripes won't disguise that fact, you know? In fact, I will go so far as to say I love what this dress is doing with my hips! I am very apple-shaped, all of my weight is distributed in my midsection. So the widening effect of the horizontal stripes actually works to make me look a little more hourglass-shaped. I look like I have big ol' hips and I'm loving it.

My "hippy" look!
Oh, and by the way, we didn't eat Arby's that night- though that would've been a perfect dinner, all things considered.

I freaking love you! :) I love my horizontal stripes too. It looks fabulous on you!

Work it, Gurl! You look great and I love the stripes on you!

I personally think horizontal stripes help to define the waist...and isn't that really what we want? I've been told not to wear horizontal stripes on my bottom half because it draws too much attention to my hips and butt. Well, maybe that's where I want the attention.

What a gorgeous dress for $8! Old Navy's fabrics are so hit and miss, glad you found a winner. It fits you beautifully - you're right, it does flatter your figure! :) Those sunnies look great on you, too.

What a deal for $8! You can't beat a great striped dress. This one looks fantastic on you. I actually think the stripes make you look wider thing is a myth too, it really is all about the fit of your clothes, not what's on it. :)

This dress and you are a fabulous combination!

You look great! I have that dress in black and white. Did you do anything to adjust the neckline? I find mine slips off my shoulders.

I love stripes, and I tend to agree with you...well-fitting stripes create curves where they might not otherwise be as pronounced. Super cute look...I loved the one you posted last time, too. You might also try these kind of neutral-on-neutral stripes with a scarf in a big floral. (I love scarves.)

I think that dress is very flattering! I think the reason is that the stripes are smaller. Wide or badly placed horizontal stripes are what's unflattering. But an all-over small horizontal stripe is always cute.

i think you look amazing! i love this dress, and you should wear stripes every day of the week if you want!!

Oh Katie, your posts always inspire me the way you have so much self confidence, you are amazing! And I agree with you, horizontal stripes look super good on all body types. You are living proof of that because this dress looks gorgeous on you!

Katie, I love how this dress hugs your curves! I find that many figure hugging dresses tend to accentuate problem areas (in my case, my tummy) but this dress falls beautifully. I've never been a fan of stripes but I think I would make an exception given this dress' flattering fit. Hey, I say this was eight bucks well spent! :)

I love your shoes in this! The slim stripes make you look thinner IMHO!

That is a cute dress. I am obssessed with horizontal stripes and have to actively keep myself from buying every piece I see. They are fab at defining a waist like Tara_St mentioned.

I love this dress! I saw it at my local Old Navy store, but they had it in every size except the one I needed :( I love the color, the shape, the simplicity...it's so cute! I love how you look in it - the stripes accentuate all your gorgeous curves and you look simply beautiful. I, too, am apple shaped (although when I'm a little less...squishy...my waist is quite small and nice), and find that stripes have that wonderful quality of making you look curvier :) I think this dress is a major winner!! :)

I also love the stripes! Count me in on trying not to buy all the stripes I see. This totally works. Fab!

You look wonderful! I wear vertical, horizontal, diagonal stripes and I DONT CARE! All that matters to me is that I feel I look good. Im glad you dont allow other people's issues stop you from looking fab!

Hi, recent lurker here. De-lurking to let you know that as a direct result of your post I bought two of these Old Navy dresses (the black & white stripe and the blue) and actually wore one last weekend to a concert at my daughter's school. It is the first dress I have worn for about 5 years or so; my work uniform is polos and jeans and I tend to wear pants/khakis all the time. Thank you for showing me that YES I can wear a dress - with stripes and pockets and a sparkly belt - and look lovely, squishy fat butt and all. You're an gorgeous, inspiring, fairy-godmother!
