Another Year Older

I had to take an extra day to get some rest from this whirlwind birthday weekend. And I'm still exhausted! Friday after work Curtis and I went to eat at the brand-new Dixie Fish Company. I had sweet tea-brined fried chicken (AMAZING) and Curtis had some of the best fried catfish I've ever tasted. I wish I could eat there every night. By the time, I got home Friday night I thought I was going to explode I was so full, but I had to squeeze in a piece of pecan praline pie from one of my favorite BBQ joints Big Deddy's. A former student's family owns it and I laid down the hints pretty heavy that I really wanted a whole pie for my birthday and that sweet girl didn't disappoint.

Saturday I woke up and treated myself to a massage. It was so relaxing that I was pretty useless for the rest of the day, but I soldiered on and headed out to my next event- my little sister's wedding on Sunday. It's been a while since I've been involved in any kind of wedding planning, so I was shocked at how exhausting it can be to get everything ready for the big day. When I put on this green Lucie Lu number, my mom commented, "You have so many pretty dresses!"

Dress: c/o Gwynnie Bee
I couldn't lie to her! I had the return envelope with me to send the dresses back to Gwynnie Bee first thing Monday morning, so I had to explain to her how it worked. And then she promptly put my butt to work. I really feel like I might have been MVP for the whole event. I dyed my sister's hair, set up her hair and makeup appointment, and saved her hydrangeas when they started wilting (put the entire flower bloom and all in a bathtub filled with ice water and those babies will perk right up!),  Curtis, with all his fashion blogging experience, took photos for my sister. I don't want to share too many because it isn't my place to share, but I couldn't resist showing just one. This was taken immediately after they said their "I dos" and I just love the tenderness of the moment. Doesn't it just make you feel all warm and gooey inside?

Retail Therapy and Stress Relief

Whenever the going gets tough over here, the tough get... shopping. It's a terrible habit, but retail therapy has always been my stress reliever of choice. Exercise just makes me sweaty. Food and drink just makes me bloaty. Meditation just makes me sleepy (as does MediCation). But shopping? Shopping makes me happy. I wanted to give into my urge, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money, so I decided to skim some online sales.

Lean in close. I don't want anyone to hear my secret shopping place. You ready? I got this awesome dress at, ahem, Wal-Mart. I know, right? Too cute!

Dress- Bella Bird for Wal-Mart (similar, similar, similar, up to XXL and several colors here)
Mint Wedges- Urban Outfitters (old, similar here, here, and here)

This dress arrived last week and it's already sold out online, but it comes in several other colors that I am contemplating as well. I've been in a real slump lately between school and being sick and Sean starting kindergarten and hating all my clothes, so this little number really made me feel cheerful when I wore it last Friday. We've gotten so busy with back to school, that most times photos for the blog take a backseat to life in general, but Sean was with Grandma, and we went exploring in the late afternoon.

We found this cool little outdoor plant shop. Sadly it was closed, but I couldn't resist taking some pictures. I want to live in this cool, funky outdoor space. I know I need to come up with healthier ways to relieve stress, but this time it was worth it.

Seeing Red, Seeing Double

At the end of a long day of dealing with teenagers at school and a mouthy five-year-old at home, the last thing I want to deal with is ironing clothes. That's a true statement, and I was really annoyed to have to iron several outfits for this week, but alas, that's not what I'm going to complain about today. Maybe next time ;)

I'm talking about rude people today. In particular, one rude person. I've never even met this person, but for the second time in six months she is on my mind and on my nerves. I have a pretty common name and a pretty generic email address. This was a necessity because of my teaching position. I was required to get a yahoo email address when I started teaching six years ago. I tried to get the basic firstnamelastname@yahoo.com, but it was taken. However, Yahoo offered me an alternative- a pretty unknown "ymail" address. Stupidly I accepted, even though Ymail is CONSTANTLY mistaken for Gmail. Most people just assume it's gmail and that I have sloppy hand-writing or that it's a typo. I don't blame them for thinking that. I probably would too.

Anyway, there is a women with the same name as me who has the gmail equivalent of  my email address, so I am sure that she gets emails that are for me fairly regularly. Not because I give out her address, but because people make innocent mistakes. Right? So last April, a student emailed an essay to me, but sent it to her email address. I was supremely pissed off when the student showed me her response. She was incredibly rude to this poor tenth grader. She didn't outright curse her, but she was pretty close. I emailed her a few times trying to explain that it was an innocent mistake and that there was no need for her to be rude and hateful to a 15 year-old girl, but this woman is just a piece of work. I'm glad I don't have to deal with her in real-life because she was definitely one of the most unpleasant people I've ever dealt with online, and that's saying A LOT!

It comes up again this week because an administrator at my school accidentally emailed her and got a similar response. I guess I'm bothered because she acts like I am purposely giving out her email address which would make ZERO sense (but I think I will start doing that for spammy things I have to sign up for, just to be petty!) and she's being unnecessarily aggressive about it. If you get a rude email from me, or no response at all, please double check that you aren't sending it to my mean doppelganger, okay?!?!

Now I'm off to do some ironing!

Fancy Pants

Over the long weekend, I came across this pin, a tutorial for the iconic Marilyn Monroe look. I am a sucker for all things Marilyn, so I watched it with great interest and was astonished when the makeup artist revealed that Marilyn's signature look took over three hours to complete. And here I was thinking she just glued on some false lashes and painted her lips red. It made me think about my own morning routine. So before I tell you how long it takes me to get ready, I will ask you: How long do you take to get ready in the morning?

Marilyn's makeup took 3 hours- who knows how long the hair took! I am hopeless with hair and makeup, so from start to finish (this includes brushing my teeth, getting dressed, hair AND makeup) I take less than thirty minutes. As far as I can tell after comparing my routine to hers, I just throw my make-up on. No contouring or precision liner over here. Marilyn wore up to five layers of lipstick, including three different shades of red, while my lipstick is haphazardly applied in the rear view mirror while sitting in the drop-off lane at Sean's elementary school every morning.

Yep, super glamorous!

I've been wearing lots of dresses lately because we have a stricter dress code at school. I  mean I usually dress up, but I always looked forward to dressing down on Fridays, and now jeans aren't allowed, I'm feeling a little stymied. It's not the end of the world, but some days, a gal just needs to wear pants. Once you take away my jeans, I literally have ONE pair of "dress pants", so I am definitely adding some pants to my fall shopping list. Add to that the fact that one of my students casually remarked, "Wow! You are really dressed down today!" when I showed up in this outfit, and I am feeling very insecure! And I'm only wearing one shade of lip gloss for crying out loud! I'm so embarrassed ;)
