Separates Anxiety

It's been a problem for a while, but I just don't own or wear many separates. Dresses are so much easier on work days, and, honestly, on weekends I really try to never change out of pajamas (or yoga pants if I'm feeling "fancy"). However, there is occasionally a need to actually get dressed on the weekends. This need usually consists of trips to get coffee, but that's not really the point, is it? The point is- sometimes I just want to dress down.

Katniss WrapTop- Kiyonna c/o Gwynnie Bee
Coated Skinny Jeans- Old Navy (regular, plus)
Flats- Old Navy
I am in love with this Katniss top from Kiyonna (borrowed from Gwynnie Bee)- the jersey knit is soft and it just perfectly skimmed my least favorite parts. Plus anything named after characters in "Hunger Games" is A-OK with me. This is why I also love "Peeta" bread ;) I digress....

So lots of people have been asking, and, yes, I'm growing my hair out. At least for right now. I'm not sure how long I will let it grow before I get aggravated and chop it all off, but I thought it might be nice to have some hair around my ears for the winter months. And this necklace?? I can't wait to show you how versatile it is- seriously, you can wear it AT LEAST nine different ways!

Layered On Necklace from Premier Designs
If you've been living under a rock and you aren't familiar with Gwynnie Bee, then I invite you to try it out for a month for FREE. This is the perfect time of the year to try out some different dresses for holiday parties without investing any money.

"Slimmer" of Hope

When I first tried this dress on, I panicked slightly. It felt SO tight; I was afraid that I would get stuck in it! Then I realized that it had a body-shaper lining on the inside, and I was hooked. I think I would have loved living in the age of girdles- now here me out, but I just like the feeling of being covered and smooth, you know? Of course at the end of the day, I also love to take it all off!

B-Slim Dress c/o Gwynnie Bee

I had never heard of B-Slim before, so Gwynnie Bee has introduced me to another great line for plus size women that I probably wouldn't have found on my own. The dress felt very luxurious, and I loved the split collar with the sequined detail. I wish I would have worn a belt with it at my natural waist just to break up the pattern a little bit, but  I will just remember that for next time. It has finally cooled off here, so I'm digging out the boots and sweaters for upcoming posts! That's almost as exciting as taking up your gut-sucking-in dress at the end of the day... Almost.

Darkness Falls

I hate Daylight Savings Time. I'm not going to get into it, even though the AP English students just recently wrote rhetorical essays on the topic. It's archaic and depressing. I always feel my SAD rearing it's ugly head in October. Why does it have to get dark so early? While I love nothing more than cuddling up each evening to the official Full House wiki hours before bedtime because it's pitch-black outside, as a fashion blogger DST presents a major challenge. When can a blogger take photos when you leave at dawn and don't get home until twilight?

I do get the occasional early evening photo shoot, like this one taken at about 5:45 Tuesday evening, but I have to warn you that for the next few months, you will be seeing a lot of my front yard and driveway. It's just too hard to find daylight hours to do much of anything else. However, I promise to mix things up every once in a while and shoot in the back yard!

Jeans- Old Navy (same)
Flats- Express (similar)

I really wanted a pair of coated skinny jeans last fall, but I thought they were too trendy to spend money on. Then Old Navy reintroduced them this season, and I just couldn't resist any longer. I've had these jeans two weeks and I've worn them half a dozen times, which is pretty impressive seeing as how we can't wear jeans to school anymore. They are as comfy as regular jeans, but definitely feel "dressier" to me, you know?

Four Eyes

I have always been an overachiever. As far back as I can remember, I have wanted to do well and make people proud. As a student that made me a suck-up and a teacher's pet and a nerd. I wanted to be smart. I wanted people to think I was smart. And to me, smart meant glasses. I wanted glasses so bad as a child. I vividly remember the year my sister got glasses and how jealous I was. I was disgusted by my perfectly good 20/20 vision, so the next year at the eye doctor, I purposely tried to fail the eye exam. By God, I would get those glasses, yet the eye doctor was onto me. For nearly 25 years, glasses have eluded me.

But not anymore! Finally (finally, even I realize this makes me sound like a weirdo!) I need glasses. I was almost giddy while picking out frames. That's what happens when you are deprived of glasses for so many years. So far I can tell a huge difference, which means I can now stay on the internet, my phone, or nose up in a book for 15 hours a day and not have any eye strain! Yay for glasses!

I bought this dress back in the early days of summer, and as I expected, it has transitioned nicely into early fall. I can't wait to pair it with a chunky cardigan and boots when the weather finally cools down.

The Best Dress Ever

This may actually be the best dress I've ever owned, and I don't take that lightly. I am in love with it. Truly, madly, deeply in love. It's not every day that you can wear something that feels like pajamas but makes you look like a queen, and I felt very regal in this maxi dress from Old Navy.We are in the midst of homecoming week at school and yesterday was "Character Day". All day students asked who I was supposed to be. At first I was totally confused, but then I realized they really thought I had dressed up. I finally decided that I wanted to be the Evil Queen from Snow White. Except maybe not totally evil ;)

This maxi come sin three other colors- basic (yet classic) black, a dark charcoal gray, and a heather/sweatshirt gray- I will own all of them, mark my words!

What I Wore: Sean's Birthday Party

I have been wanting to recreate this cute and causal look from Audrey of Putting Me Together for a couple of weeks. and finally this weekend was the perfect opportunity to try it out. We celebrated Sean's 6th birthday with a big party at a Pump It Up-type place with lots of room for running and lots of inflatables for bouncing. I knew I wanted to be comfortable, but also look stylish, not like a frumpy, frazzled mom.

This simple skirt and t-shirt combo fit the bill. I felt cute, but I didn't have to worry about getting super hot in pants or about showing too much thigh in a dress or skirt. The best part is, you probably already have the pieces you need in your closet to recreate this outfit yourself!

Henley T-shirt- Old Navy (same)
Floral Print Skirt- Wal-Mart (similar, same)
Pointed Ankle Flats- Old Navy (same)
Tassel Zip Tote- Old Navy (same)
Owl Belt- old from Cato's (similar)
I am really excited about my two newest Old Navy purchases- these adorable flats (with removable ankle straps- woo hoo for options!) and this big faux leather tote. The bag has plenty of room for all my junk- one day I need to do a "What's in My Bag?" post; anyone interested in that? And the bag looks and feels much more expensive than it actually is. If you like it, I recommend you buy it right now because it's already selling out on the website. These two items are going to be staples of my fall wardrobe and my spring wardrobe as well, so I know they were worthy investments.

Bracelets, Watch, and Ring- Premier Designs

Here are just a few pics from Sean's celebration. He is obsessed with Sonic the Hedgehog right now, but it was nearly impossible to find Sonic-themed birthday stuff, apparently there is a licensing issue with Sega. Nevertheless, he was really excited to see all his yellow and blue goodies!

A Wrinkle in Time

I know that there are really important things going on in the world. I rarely get to watch the news anymore, but I read all about it in my newspaper staff's weekly current events write-ups. Sometimes it's hard to write a blog post when I think about how superficial it must seem to talk about clothes and shoes when there are real problems, but at the same time, I know that the times I am able to catch the news or read the paper, I am always downhearted at all the bad news, and I turn to blogs to make me smile and lighten the mood. So much in life is serious, we all deserve a little frivolous now and then.

Jewelry-Premier Designs

So why can't we in 2013 invent truly wrinkle-free clothing? And why is it that the cuter the shoe the more it hurts to wear it? These are unimportant questions that bother me with today's outfit. I have and love a crepe shirt dress from Old Navy from last fall, so when I saw this pretty Twilight Lagoon color, I knew I wanted to add it to my closet. But this thing is so wrinkly! I got up early to iron (you know how much I hate that!), and then I pressed it again before I took photos- the things I do :)

Pewter Wedges- old from Target (similar here and here)
Do wrinkles drive you crazy? Do you ignore it? Do you have any super tricks for ironing?

Workin' on My Fitness with Monster N-Tunes

I don't talk very often about going to the gym because to be honest with you I really, really, really hate working out. I don't get the "high" that so many people talk about. Apparently my endorphins are non-existent. And I HATE getting sweaty, especially with short hair. I literally pour sweat, and I am a miserable mess the whole time. So anything I can do to make my workouts a little more tolerable is welcomed. I work out three or four afternoons a week at a local gym, and I love when a friend can work out with me at the same time, so we can chat about work and life. But some days that just doesn't work out and working out can be a real drag.

When Monster N-Tune sent me a pair of their headphones to try out, I was really excited to use them at the gym to keep myself entertained while working out. I see all the cool kids with their brightly-colored, over-sized headphones (reminds me of my dad's huge can headphones I used to wear when listening to old records when I was a child), but being on a teacher's salary, I definitely can't afford $300 headphones. These retail for about $150 which is much more reasonable, and since I am a notorious klutz, I love the durability of these babies. I have a five-year-old and he's tough on everything as well, and these headphones can literally be twisted all around without breaking which is pretty impressive. If I'm going to be dropping money on something that he will use too, I definitely don't want it to break.

I don't have much to compare the sound quality to because I've been using super crappy ear buds for what 10- 15 years, so I was truly amazed at how great everything sounded. They are comfortable to wear and easy to adjust and the noise isolating feature works really well (who wants to hear a bunch of people grunting their way through a workout?) I am a little ashamed to admit that I'm really digging Snoop Dog (Lion? Whatever!) and Miley Cyrus's "Ashtrays and Heartbreaks" lately and the ear buds, or worse, the built-in speaker on my Galaxy, just don't pick up on all the little nuances. Same goes with my other favorite Miley Cyrus song as of late "Wrecking Ball". It's full of little static-y, record scratches and background conversations that I never could hear before. I seriously felt super cool be-bopping around the gym wearing the N-Tune headphones. Though the fact that I used "be-bopping" as a verb probably negates any coolness factor I might have had!

The headphones come in five different "candy" colors and the grape color I got was super vibrant and really fun. They stayed on my super-sweaty head just fine during my 45-minute workout and I admit I love the Music Share cable option which allowed me to put the cord on either the right or left side- maybe one day I'll be cool enough to actually share my headphones and my music with someone else- as soon as I find someone who will admit they love Miley Cyrus songs too! Until then, I don't have to share! Woo hoo :)
